Two-alarm fire destroys home in downtown Carthage – Copy

Officials continue to investigate the two-alarm fire that destroyed a historic home in downtown Carthage early Sunday morning. According to MCN, the fire broke out just before 1 a.m. at a two-story home in the 200 block of East Barrett Street. Heavy fog initially made it difficult for firefighters to see smoke, but flames were later discovered in the back of the house and quickly spread through the walls and into the attic of the 1870-era structure. Crews battled intense flames for hours before bringing the fire under control.

Four people — two adults and two young children — along with the family dog were inside at the time and all escaped safely. The cause of the fire has not yet been released. A fundraiser was launched through GoFundMe for the Kimbrough family to help with emergency needs. Organizers say the donation goal has now been met, and the fundraiser is being closed, thanking the community for its overwhelming support during the holiday season.
