Southern Pines YMCA Project Officially Comes to an End

The long-discussed Southern Pines YMCA project will not move forward after the YMCA of the Sandhills announced it could not secure enough private funding to build the proposed facility. The nonprofit has informed town officials it will return the eight-acre property that had been set aside for the project.

Fundraising Fell Short

According to YMCA leadership, a year-long fundraising effort generated support from several donors but did not raise enough money to meet project deadlines established in an agreement with the Town of Southern Pines.

The proposed facility was expected to cost more than $20 million and would have included fitness areas, youth programming space, outdoor recreation amenities and community gathering areas.

A Project Years in the Making

Town leaders had spent nearly a decade working alongside the YMCA to explore bringing the organization to Southern Pines. In 2023, the town conveyed approximately eight acres of land near West Morganton Road and South Henley Street for the proposed development.

Because certain milestones outlined in the agreement were not completed, the property will now revert back to the Town of Southern Pines.

Community Need Still Exists

Although the Southern Pines YMCA project has officially ended, YMCA officials say community demand has not disappeared. A market study previously conducted indicated there is still a need for expanded youth programs, wellness opportunities and family recreation throughout Moore County.

Town officials have expressed disappointment but say they appreciate the effort made by the YMCA and will now determine future uses for the property once ownership officially returns to the town.

While this chapter has closed, many residents continue to hope a similar community recreation facility could someday become a reality in the Sandhills.
