Sandhills motorists traveling through Sanford should allow extra time this week because of a multi-day closure on U.S. 15-501.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has closed both southbound lanes of U.S. 15-501 between Deep River Road and Northview Drive. The closure began Sunday night and is scheduled to continue through Friday afternoon.
Southbound Detour and Northbound Lane Reduction
Southbound motorists are being directed around the construction zone using Deep River Road, Colon Road and U.S. 1 South. Drivers should follow the posted detour signs rather than attempting to enter the closed section.
Northbound U.S. 15-501 remains open, but traffic is reduced to one lane through the work area. That reduction could create delays in both directions, particularly during the morning and afternoon commuting periods.
Crews Replacing Drainage Pipe
NCDOT said the closure is needed so crews can replace a crossline drainage pipe beneath the highway. The department expects all lanes to reopen by 3:30 p.m. Friday, October 23, although the schedule remains dependent on weather and construction conditions.
The closure is especially important for Moore County residents who use U.S. 15-501 to reach Sanford, northern Lee County or U.S. 1. Motorists may want to leave earlier than usual and check traffic conditions before beginning their trip.
Drivers Asked to Use Caution
Transportation officials are asking motorists to remain alert near workers and equipment, reduce their speed and obey temporary traffic signs.
Current road conditions and any changes to the reopening schedule are available at DriveNC.gov.
