Driver Critically Injured After Richmond County Pursuit

A driver suffered life-threatening injuries after a law-enforcement pursuit ended in a crash in Richmond County.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 9:07 p.m. to a report of a suspicious vehicle near McDonald Church Road. The caller reportedly told authorities that one person associated with the vehicle was wearing a mask or other face covering.

Pursuit Continued Through Roberdel

A responding deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling away from the area at a high rate of speed. Authorities allege the driver refused to stop when the deputy attempted a traffic stop.

The Sheriff’s Office said the pursuit continued through the Roberdel community. During the pursuit, the driver allegedly ran stop signs and passed other vehicles by entering the lane for oncoming traffic.

The pursuit ended on Richmond Road Extension near Terry Bridge when the driver lost control and crashed. Authorities described the resulting injuries as serious and life-threatening.

Items Reportedly Recovered

Deputies reported finding a face covering matching the description given by the original caller. They also said a Glock 19 handgun and an unspecified amount of United States currency were recovered from the vehicle.

The driver’s identity had not been publicly released. Authorities also had not announced criminal charges or provided additional information about the circumstances behind the original suspicious-vehicle report.

Investigation Continues

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Highway Patrol are investigating the pursuit and crash. Additional details may be released as investigators complete their work and obtain updated information about the driver’s condition.

Any potential criminal conduct remains an allegation unless established in court.
