FirstHealth Adds AI Guidance Technology for Hip-Replacement Surgery

FirstHealth of the Carolinas has added an artificial-intelligence surgical-guidance system for hip-replacement procedures at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

The Zimmer Biomet OrthoGrid Hip AI system provides surgeons with real-time measurements and guidance during total hip-replacement surgery. FirstHealth says the information can help surgeons position implants based on each patient’s individual anatomy.

Technology First Used in September

Pinehurst Surgical Clinic orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Moore IV was the first physician to use the technology at Moore Regional Hospital. The initial procedure took place in September.

The system is designed for hip replacements performed through the direct anterior approach. It remains controlled by the surgeon and is intended to fit into the medical team’s existing surgical process.

Potential Benefits for Patients and Surgical Teams

According to FirstHealth, the system may help improve the precision and consistency of implant placement. It does not require surgeons to place additional hardware in the patient’s hip or thigh bone.

The health system also says the technology may reduce the number of X-rays needed during a procedure, potentially lowering radiation exposure for patients and surgical teams.

As with other surgical technologies, the system supports—but does not replace—the medical judgment of the surgeon. Individual outcomes depend on a patient’s condition, procedure and recovery.

Advanced Orthopedic Care in Pinehurst

The addition expands the orthopedic services available at Moore Regional Hospital. FirstHealth serves patients from Moore County and communities across the central Carolinas, making the new system potentially relevant to patients throughout the Sandhills.

People considering hip-replacement surgery should speak with a qualified medical provider about available procedures, possible benefits and risks, and whether a specific surgical approach is appropriate for them.
