Pinehurst Officer Justified Shooting After Ax Incident, District Attorney Confirms

Pinehurst update

A Pinehurst officer justified shooting ruling has been issued following an investigation into a deadly 2025 incident involving a man armed with an ax. The district attorney determined that officers acted appropriately under the circumstances.

According to officials, the shooting occurred outside a burning home in Pinehurst, where emergency crews had been dispatched earlier that day.

Details of the Pinehurst Officer Justified Shooting

Investigators say the individual exited the home carrying a firefighter’s ax and ignored repeated commands from officers to drop the weapon.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, including the use of a TASER, but the man continued advancing toward emergency responders. Authorities say officers then used deadly force after determining there was an immediate threat.

The individual was transported to a medical facility, where he later died.

Review and Findings

The case was reviewed by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the 29th Prosecutorial District.

The district attorney concluded that the officers had a reasonable belief that lives were in danger and that the use of deadly force was justified.

The Pinehurst officer justified shooting case is now considered closed following the review.
