An unforgettable Olympic dog cross-country skiing moment is melting hearts around the world after a runaway pup unexpectedly joined athletes during a women’s team sprint race.

During the Winter Olympics cross-country skiing team sprint qualifier in Lago di Tesero, Italy, broadcast cameras captured a cheerful dog sprinting behind competitors as they pushed toward the finish line. The crowd roared with laughter and delight as the four-legged guest made his surprise Olympic debut.

And yes — the good boy did, in fact, cross the finish line.

Meet Nazgul: The Unexpected Olympic Star

The star of this viral Olympic dog cross-country skiing moment is a two-year-old Czechoslovakian wolfdog named Nazgul. According to reporting from NPR, the adventurous pup is local to the area and managed to escape from home on race day.

His owners later explained that Nazgul likely followed event officials after becoming upset watching them leave.

“He was crying this morning more than normal… I think he just wanted to follow us,” the owner said.

Mission accomplished, Nazgul.

Skiers React to the Fur-ious Finish

Despite the unexpected cameo, athletes kept their focus during the Olympic dog cross-country skiing moment.

Argentinian skier Nahiara Díaz González said she barely noticed the canine competitor in the heat of the race.

“I was so focused on finishing… it was just a fun experience. This is not normal,” she said.

Sweden’s Maja Dahlqvist — who later won gold with teammate Jonna Sundling — summed it up best:

“That was something I had never seen ever before. Kind of crazy.”

Why This Breed Loves the Action

The American Kennel Club describes the Czechoslovakian Vlciak as energetic and well-suited for outdoor activities like running, hiking, and tracking. In other words, Nazgul may have been the most naturally qualified unofficial participant in the Olympic dog cross-country skiing moment.

Fortunately, race officials confirmed the pup did not interfere with results, and organizers safely returned him to his owners shortly after his viral run.
