New projections from transportation planners suggest Moore County Traffic Growth 2055 could dramatically change how residents travel throughout the Sandhills. Early findings from a developing travel demand model show major roadways may face increasing congestion despite ongoing improvement projects.
The model was presented to transportation leaders as part of the planning process for future transportation needs across Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Whispering Pines, and surrounding communities.
Traffic Expected to Rise Significantly
The Moore County Traffic Growth 2055 model projects vehicle miles traveled could increase by more than 66 percent over the next three decades.
Daily traffic volumes are expected to increase by more than 62 percent, while vehicle travel times could rise by nearly 65 percent.
Transportation officials say that means trips that currently take 10 minutes could take approximately 16 and a half minutes by 2055.
Roads Showing Future Capacity Issues
Several major transportation corridors were identified as potential problem areas.
Roads including U.S. 1, U.S. 15-501, N.C. 5, and N.C. 211 showed signs of future capacity concerns. Portions of the Pinehurst Traffic Circle were also highlighted despite planned improvements.
Many of these roadways are already undergoing widening projects and safety upgrades.
Officials Say Model Is Not Final
Transportation leaders stressed that the Moore County Traffic Growth 2055 analysis remains under development.
The model uses current population trends, approved housing developments, and transportation data to forecast future travel patterns.
Officials emphasized that forecasting decades into the future involves uncertainty and that the model serves as one planning tool among many.
Planning for Future Growth
The Sandhills Metropolitan Planning Organization is developing a long-range transportation plan through 2055.
The goal is to identify infrastructure needs before congestion and safety concerns become more severe.
As Moore County continues to grow, transportation planning will remain a major topic for residents, businesses, and local governments.
