Moore County Approves Funding for Schools, Fire Protection, and Airport Expansion

Moore County Commissioners have approved several major investments that will impact education, public safety, and economic development across the county.

During their June 2 meeting, commissioners authorized funding for a new Moore County Schools Information Technology facility, approved support for a new fire engine serving Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, and cleared the way for additional hangar construction at the Moore County Airport.

County leaders say the projects are designed to address current needs while preparing for future growth throughout Moore County and the Sandhills region.

New Technology Facility Planned for Moore County Schools

One of the largest items approved by commissioners was a $3.3 million allocation from the county’s Capital Reserve Fund for a new Moore County Schools Information Technology facility.

Under the agreement, Moore County Schools will direct $3.3 million in lottery funding toward construction of the new Carthage Elementary School. The county’s contribution toward the technology facility will be credited against the elementary school’s overall construction budget.

Officials say the arrangement allows both projects to move forward while maximizing available resources and reducing the overall financial impact.

Fire Protection Investment for Cypress Pointe

Commissioners also approved funding assistance for Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue to purchase a second fire engine.

The total cost of the apparatus is more than $1.1 million. By using an upfront payment option, county officials estimate the purchase price can be reduced by approximately $88,000.

The county’s share of the funding will not exceed $784,041.

The additional engine will strengthen emergency response capabilities in one of Moore County’s growing service areas and help ensure firefighters have the equipment needed to serve residents safely and efficiently.

Airport Expansion Moves Forward

Another major project approved by commissioners involves expansion at the Moore County Airport.

Airport officials received approval to construct two additional hangars as demand for aircraft storage continues to increase.

According to Airport Director Richard Coultier, the airport currently has approximately 105 aircraft based at the facility and a waiting list for hangar space that stretches nearly five years.

The airport plans to finance approximately $5 million for construction. Officials say future expansion plans could include additional hangars and taxiway improvements as growth continues.

County leaders noted that aircraft based at the airport contribute to the local tax base and support economic activity throughout Moore County.

Looking Ahead

In addition to the funding approvals, commissioners advanced several zoning and development-related items that will return for future public hearings.

The county is expected to continue evaluating growth-related projects as Moore County remains one of the fastest-growing areas in North Carolina.
