A West End man has been sentenced to just under 20 to nearly 25 years in prison for a 2023 impaired-driving crash that killed two people and permanently injured a third on U.S. 1 in Aberdeen.
Darren Maurice Lindsay pleaded guilty September 8 in Moore County Superior Court to two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by motor vehicle and several driving offenses. Those additional charges included driving while impaired, reckless driving, driving left of center and driving while his license was revoked for an impaired-driving revocation.
The crash happened September 9, 2023, near Mac’s Breakfast Anytime. According to the Moore County District Attorney’s Office, Lindsay was driving an Infiniti SUV south on U.S. 1 when he crossed three lanes and struck a northbound Kia carrying three people.
A rear-seat passenger in the Kia died at the scene. A front-seat passenger later died at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. The Kia’s driver survived after suffering serious injuries that required multiple surgeries, but prosecutors said the driver was left with permanent disabilities.
Hospital records obtained during the investigation showed Lindsay had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.25 at the time of the crash, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Resident Superior Court Judge Warren McSweeney sentenced Lindsay on September 11 to a minimum of 238 months and a maximum of 298 months in state prison. That equals approximately 19 years and 10 months to 24 years and 10 months.
