Moore County Commissioners Schedule Special Meeting on Flock Cameras

The Moore County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Monday afternoon to discuss the county’s use and proposed expansion of Flock license-plate-reading cameras.

The meeting begins at 4 p.m. in the Grand Hall of the Moore County Senior Enrichment Center at 8040 U.S. 15-501 in West End.

Residents should note that the Senior Enrichment Center is the official meeting location. Earlier information listed the Rick Rhyne Public Safety Center as the venue.

Flock Cameras Generate Local Debate

Flock cameras photograph vehicles and license plates traveling along public roads. Law-enforcement agencies can search the system for vehicles connected to criminal investigations, missing-person cases and wanted suspects.

Supporters say the technology gives officers another tool for locating stolen vehicles and responding to serious crimes. Critics have raised concerns about privacy, data retention, information sharing and the potential misuse of vehicle-location records.

The special meeting follows public comments and questions from Moore County residents about the camera network. Commissioners previously delayed action on additional funding while gathering more information about the system and its policies.

What Commissioners Will Discuss

The county’s official notice lists Flock cameras as the purpose of the meeting. The notice does not indicate whether commissioners are expected to take a formal vote.

The discussion is expected to give commissioners and law-enforcement officials an opportunity to address how the technology is used, what safeguards are in place and how the cameras could affect residents.

The meeting is open to the public. Additional information, including agendas and meeting minutes, is available through the Moore County government website.

Star 102.5 will continue following the discussion and any decisions concerning the future of Flock cameras in Moore County.
