Two people who were providing in-home care to an elderly man in Pinehurst have been charged after police say they stole tens of thousands of dollars from their client.
Janet Berzack, 52, and Douglas Berzack, 68, are accused of forging at least ten checks totaling approximately $50,000 and unlawfully diverting annuity payments.
The investigation began after the victim’s financial institution reported suspicious activity to Pinehurst Police. Detectives say the alleged crimes took place in the fall of 2025.
Janet Berzack faces 26 charges including forgery, identity theft, and exploitation of a disabled elder, and is being held on a $425,000 bond. Douglas Berzack faces 17 charges and is being held on a $125,000 bond.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
