A powerful winter storm continues to impact Moore County and the Sandhills, with the National Weather Service confirming that a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until early Sunday morning. Additional snowfall, gusty winds, and dangerously cold temperatures will keep conditions hazardous across the region.

What’s Happening Right Now

Snow has been falling steadily across central North Carolina, with heavier bursts expected through Saturday night. The National Weather Service says an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible across Moore County, including Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Carthage, and surrounding communities.

Winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour may cause blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility and making already slick roads even more dangerous.

Travel Conditions: Expect Major Impacts

Officials warn that roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to remain slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult or even impossible at times, particularly overnight.

Motorists are urged to delay all non-essential travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, use extreme caution and allow extra time. State officials recommend keeping emergency supplies in your vehicle in case you become stranded.

Extreme Cold Follows the Snow

In addition to the winter storm, the Sandhills remains under a Cold Weather Advisory through late Saturday night, followed by an Extreme Cold Warning from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Wind chills could drop as low as five degrees below zero, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed without proper protection.

Safety Reminders from Emergency Officials

  • Dress in layers, including a hat, gloves, and face covering if you must go outside
  • Keep pets indoors and limit outdoor exposure
  • Check on elderly neighbors, family, and friends
  • Use space heaters safely and never operate grills or generators indoors
  • Protect exposed pipes to reduce the risk of freezing and rupture

Power Outages and Closings

Power outages have been reported across North Carolina as snow and wind continue to stress trees and power lines. Additional outages are possible overnight. Residents should prepare for extended cold conditions if power is lost.

Closings and delays for schools, businesses, churches, and events continue to be announced as conditions change.
