Drivers traveling through downtown Carthage should prepare for traffic changes as two major roadwork projects move closer to construction.
The upcoming Carthage roadwork projects include the first phase of downtown improvements around the courthouse circle and repairs to damaged underground infrastructure along Summit Street.
Courthouse Circle Construction Expected in Late August
Carthage Town Manager Emily Yopp recently updated the Board of Commissioners on preparations for the downtown revitalization project. Construction is expected to begin in late August, although the delivery of storm drains remains a key factor in the project’s starting date.
The first phase will include the installation of four storm drains and underground piping beneath the roadway. Crews will also make improvements to crosswalks and install pedestrian islands near the courthouse circle.
Town officials said portions of the circle may need to close while the storm drains and piping are installed. Traffic detour plans are being developed to help drivers navigate the downtown area during construction.
Despite the expected disruption, officials said county government offices and downtown businesses should remain accessible. The county parking lot is also expected to remain available during the work.
The contractor remains confident that the first phase of the downtown project can be completed by the Dec. 31 deadline. Nighttime construction also continues along McReynolds Street entering Carthage.
Summit Street Culvert Repairs Moving Forward
A separate project will repair damaged culverts beneath Summit Street. The underground infrastructure was damaged following Tropical Storm Chantal last summer.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency-funded project has completed the contracting and funding process. Carthage officials authorized approximately $415,000 for the installation of two culvert pipes.
Fred Smith Company will serve as the contractor. The company has begun ordering materials and is finishing work on other projects before scheduling the pre-construction meeting with town officials.
A firm construction date for the Summit Street project has not yet been announced, but town officials expect work to begin in the coming weeks.
Drivers Should Expect Temporary Delays
The two projects are expected to improve drainage, pedestrian access and long-term road conditions in Carthage. However, drivers should anticipate temporary delays, changing traffic patterns and possible detours around the courthouse circle and Summit Street.
Residents and business owners should watch for additional announcements from the Town of Carthage as construction schedules and detour plans are finalized.
