US 1 Lane Closure in Aberdeen Tonight — What Moore County Drivers Need to Know

If you’re planning to drive north on US 1 through the Aberdeen area tonight, plan for a slowdown. One lane of US 1 northbound — between Montford Street and Bonnie Brooke Road — is scheduled for an overnight closure on Monday, April 13.

The work is part of a larger road improvement project from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The goal is to create what NCDOT calls “reduced conflict intersections” along this stretch of US 1 in Moore County. That design uses a center island to separate traffic lanes, with a series of U-turn bulbs that let drivers safely cross the road without cutting across oncoming traffic.

What’s Happening Tonight on US 1

Tonight’s specific work involves erosion control along the roadway. While it’s a single lane closure, drivers in the Southern Pines and Aberdeen area should expect some delays and shifting traffic patterns.

NCDOT is asking drivers to pay close attention to posted signs throughout the active construction zone and to use extra caution while passing through. The US 1 lane closure is weather-dependent, so conditions could affect the schedule.

Why This Project Matters for Moore County

The reduced conflict intersection project is designed to make one of Moore County’s busiest corridors safer for everyone — whether you’re heading to work, running errands in Aberdeen or Pinehurst, or just passing through on your way up to the Triangle.

These types of intersections have shown strong safety improvements in other parts of North Carolina by reducing the number of high-speed cross-traffic conflicts. Once complete, drivers will use dedicated U-turn access points rather than cutting directly across lanes of traffic.
