A Flexible Future: Inside STARS Charter School’s Virtual Academy

Stars Charter School Virtual Academy

STARS Charter School Virtual Academy Registration is now open.

In the Sandhills, education is evolving — and for many families, flexibility is becoming just as important as curriculum.

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether traditional school is the best fit for your child, you’re not alone. Between travel schedules, extracurricular passions, work commitments, and simply different learning styles, more families across Moore County and North Carolina are exploring alternatives.

One option gaining momentum is the Virtual Academy at STARS Charter School — and enrollment for the upcoming school year is officially open.

What Makes STARS Charter School Virtual Academy Different?

The Virtual Academy was designed to offer the same academic integrity and support as in-person education — but with significantly more flexibility.

According to Principal Mr. Sewell, no two student schedules look exactly alike.

Some students:

  • Log in early, finish assignments by mid-morning, and free up the rest of their day.
  • Complete an entire week’s work by Tuesday.
  • Participate daily in live instructional sessions.
  • Work independently and request one-on-one tutoring only when needed.

The common thread? Students can tailor the rhythm of their education to fit their lives.

Real-World Flexibility for Real-Life Families

One of the most appealing features of the Stars Charter School Virtual Academy is how adaptable it is for families.

  • Students who travel for athletics, arts, or competitions can complete coursework anywhere.
  • Working parents can have their children attend live instruction during the day and complete assignments together in the evening.
  • Stay-at-home parents can work alongside their children at home — or even from a coffee shop.

And yes — if you’re on vacation and there’s Wi-Fi, school can travel with you.

What Does a Typical Day Look Like?

Students use the Edmentum learning platform, where they can:

  • View their entire week’s assignments on Monday
  • See a full semester overview
  • Track completed and upcoming work
  • Sign up for live instructional sessions
  • Request tutoring

Parents aren’t left out either.

Each family receives access to a parent dashboard, allowing them to:

  • Monitor assignments
  • Check grades
  • Communicate directly with teachers
  • Track progress across the semester

There are no surprises — everything is visible and organized.

Multiple Layers of Support

A common misconception about virtual education is that students are “on their own.”

That’s not the case at STARS Charter School Virtual Academy.

Students have access to:

  • Live instructional sessions (with opportunities for discussion and interaction)
  • One-on-one virtual tutoring
  • On-campus staff support
  • Specialized services for students with IEP accommodations
  • Direct communication with teachers

Some sessions may include students from across North Carolina, offering a broader classroom experience — even online.

Social & Campus Opportunities Still Matter

Virtual doesn’t mean disconnected.

Students enrolled in STARS Virtual Academy are invited to participate in:

  • After-school clubs (gaming, dance, art, STEM and more)
  • Book fairs
  • Fall festivals
  • Campus events
  • Musical productions and performances (free admission for virtual students)

In fact, STARS’ student productions are widely known in Moore County for their creativity and student-built sets, costumes, and tech production.

Students can stay connected — socially and creatively — while learning virtually.

Who Can Enroll?

Beginning next school year, STARS Virtual Academy will serve students across all 100 counties in North Carolina.

Currently:

  • Virtual enrollment includes grades 4 through 9
  • Plans are in place to expand through high school in coming years
  • Enrollment remains open into the fall (last year it stayed open until October)

Whether you live in Moore County or elsewhere in North Carolina, the program is expanding its reach.

Is Virtual Education Right for Your Child?

Virtual education may be a strong fit if your child:

  • Thrives with self-paced learning
  • Needs scheduling flexibility
  • Has outside commitments (sports, travel, arts)
  • Benefits from parental oversight
  • Prefers structured online instruction

Every child learns differently. What works beautifully for one may not for another — and that’s okay.

The Virtual Academy simply provides another option for families looking to align education with their lifestyle.
