North Carolina law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols statewide as the annual Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” campaign officially gets underway.

The statewide initiative, led by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program, runs through May 31 and focuses on increasing seat belt use during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Officials say wearing a seat belt remains one of the simplest ways to reduce injuries and save lives in serious crashes.

North Carolina Click It or Ticket Campaign Targets Holiday Travel

During last year’s Memorial Day enforcement campaign, officers across North Carolina issued more than 4,700 citations for seat belt and restraint violations.

State officials also reported that more than 460 people were killed in crashes during 2024 while not wearing seat belts or proper child restraints.

Drivers traveling through Moore County, Southern Pines, Aberdeen and surrounding Sandhills communities can expect increased patrols and enforcement throughout the holiday weekend.

Officials are also reminding drivers to avoid distractions, obey speed limits and plan ahead before traveling.

Busy Summer Travel Season Begins Across North Carolina

Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the unofficial start of summer travel, bringing heavier traffic across highways and local roads statewide.

Transportation safety officials say taking a few seconds to buckle up can significantly reduce the risk of severe injury during crashes.

More traffic safety information can be found through the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
