New U.S. Census Bureau estimates show Moore County population growth continues steadily across the Sandhills, with Aberdeen recording the largest increase among local municipalities.
Between July 2024 and July 2025, Aberdeen grew from 9,595 residents to more than 10,000 people. That marks nearly a 5 percent increase in just one year.
Aberdeen Leads Moore County Population Growth
Town leaders say continued housing construction and new developments are fueling Moore County population growth. Hundreds of homes are currently planned or under construction in Aberdeen alone.
Southern Pines also saw strong growth, adding more than 300 residents during the same time period. Pinehurst, Whispering Pines, Carthage, Robbins, Pinebluff, and Foxfire Village all experienced population increases as well.
County officials say the Sandhills region remains attractive because of its quality of life, healthcare access, retirement opportunities, and proximity to Fort Bragg.
Managing Infrastructure and Services
While growth can increase tax revenue, local leaders say it also creates pressure on infrastructure, staffing, schools, roads, and emergency services.
Aberdeen Mayor Robbie Farrell said managing that growth responsibly remains one of the town’s biggest challenges moving forward.
Over 1,000 apartment units are expected to become available across Moore County this year as additional housing projects continue throughout Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Pinehurst.
Additional Census data and population information can be found through the U.S. Census Bureau.
