The Moore County Board of Education has approved Dr. Rachel Burris as the district’s new Director of Curriculum and Instruction, a key leadership role shaping academic programs across Moore County Schools. She will officially assume the position on April 1, 2026.
Experienced Education Leader Steps Into District Role
Dr. Burris currently serves as Assistant Director for Curriculum and Instruction for Moore County Schools. With more than 25 years of experience in public education, she brings extensive expertise in classroom instruction, district leadership, curriculum development, professional learning, and instructional improvement.
Her career began as an eighth-grade English language arts teacher in Moore County. She later served in senior leadership positions in Scotland County Schools, supporting curriculum oversight, gifted education programming, accountability initiatives, and professional development efforts.
Focus on Instructional Excellence in Moore County
Dr. Burris holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction and is recognized for her collaborative leadership style and commitment to data-driven decision-making. In her current role, she has supported district-wide literacy implementation, professional learning communities, and teacher and administrator development initiatives aligned with the district’s instructional framework.
Superintendent Tim Locklair praised her appointment, stating that her strong relationships across the district and instructional expertise position her to continue advancing high-quality teaching and learning throughout Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and surrounding communities.
The leadership transition comes as Moore County Schools continues focusing on student achievement, instructional consistency, and long-term academic planning across the Sandhills region.
