Moore County leaders are preparing for public feedback on the latest Moore County NC budget proposal, which includes a slight reduction in property taxes while increasing funding for fire protection services. County Manager Wayne Vest presented the spending plan this week as commissioners continue shaping the fiscal year 2026-2027 budget.
The proposed county tax rate would drop from 29.5 cents to 29 cents per $100 of property value. However, the fire protection rate would increase slightly from 8.75 cents to 9.25 cents.
Education and Public Safety Lead Moore County NC Budget Proposal
The Moore County NC budget proposal focuses heavily on education, public safety, and health services. Moore County Schools would receive more than $54.7 million in funding, including debt service. Sandhills Community College is expected to receive nearly $7.9 million in local funding.
County officials say continued growth in Moore County is helping strengthen tax revenues. The county projects about 3 percent growth in revenue collections this fiscal year.
Commissioners also noted that the proposed tax changes come one year before Moore County’s next property revaluation cycle. Property revaluations can significantly impact home values and future tax bills.
Public Hearing Scheduled in Carthage
Residents will have an opportunity to speak directly with county leaders during a public hearing scheduled for June 2 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will take place inside the Commissioners’ Meeting Room at the historic courthouse in Carthage.
County leaders say public input remains an important part of finalizing the Moore County NC budget proposal before adoption later this summer.
Moore County continues balancing growth, infrastructure needs, and rising service demands throughout Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and surrounding Sandhills communities.
