A new nonprofit organization could soon help support beautification projects, fundraising efforts and community initiatives throughout Southern Pines.
The Friends of Southern Pines nonprofit is being organized by local residents who want to support town projects through charitable fundraising, volunteer work and civic engagement. Organizers say the group’s mission is to enhance and promote Southern Pines through educational, environmental and community-focused initiatives.
Town leaders expressed support for the concept during a recent council discussion, though questions were raised about the nonprofit’s proposed branding and relationship with the town government.
Town Leaders Raise Questions About Logo Use
The Friends of Southern Pines nonprofit asked the town for permission to use part of the official Southern Pines logo in its branding and merchandise.
Several council members said they supported the nonprofit’s mission but worried the proposed design looked too similar to the town’s official branding. Officials also raised concerns about setting a precedent for future groups wanting to use the town logo.
Town Attorney Mac McCarley is expected to help develop a policy regarding logo usage and possible licensing agreements moving forward.
Leaders with the nonprofit said they are now exploring alternative logo concepts while continuing work to establish the organization.
Focus on Community Projects and Beautification
Organizers say one major area of interest involves helping support projects connected to the Whitehall Tract at Reservoir Park.
The Friends of Southern Pines nonprofit hopes to assist with projects outlined in the area’s master plan, including possible beautification features like pollinator gardens and environmental improvements.
Town staff also noted that nonprofit organizations can sometimes access grants and donations that municipalities are unable to pursue directly.
Supporters say the group would operate independently from the town while still working alongside community leaders and following town-approved plans.
Southern Pines already has successful examples of similar partnerships, including Friends of the Southern Pines Public Library, which has supported local programming and improvements for decades.
Mayor Taylor Clement and council members praised residents for wanting to become more involved in improving the community.
The Friends of Southern Pines nonprofit is currently registered with the North Carolina Secretary of State and has applied for tax-exempt status.
