A Lee County animal rescue organization says direct communication between rescue groups and the Lee County Animal Shelter has been restored following concerns about recently announced restrictions.
It Takes A Village Rescue NC announced the change on August 31. The update came after rescue organizations contacted county government officials regarding the shelter’s earlier communication procedures.
Under the previously announced process, members of the public could submit public-information requests through the county’s website, while rescue organizations would receive weekly email updates about animals housed at the shelter. Rescue advocates raised concerns that the process could make it more difficult to quickly coordinate placements for animals needing assistance.
County discusses additional shelter support
Lee County Commissioner Chairperson Samantha Martin told Sandhills News that county leaders are discussing adjustments intended to better support the shelter.
Potential improvements under discussion include adding a social media officer, housekeeping assistance and a part-time employee. Rescue advocates have also proposed spaying and neutering animals before adoption as part of the county’s efforts to control animal overpopulation.
It Takes A Village Rescue NC submitted information about the proposal to the Lee County Health Department for review. The issue is expected to receive additional discussion during the department’s consolidated meeting on September 16.
That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Gordon Wicker Conference Room, located at 106 Hillcrest Drive in Sanford.
