The effort to bring Moore County Airport commercial air service to the Sandhills could soon take a major step forward. Airport leaders confirmed they are awaiting a decision on a $1 million federal grant that would help complete funding needed to launch daily commercial flights in Moore County.
The airport recently applied for funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program, commonly known as SCASDP.
Moore County Airport Commercial Air Service Funding Nears Goal
If approved, the federal grant would allow the Moore County Airport to reach its $3 million funding target needed to secure a commercial airline route.
The funding effort has already received support from several major organizations across the Sandhills, including the USGA, Pinehurst Resort, and FirstHealth.
Airport officials say the funding would act as a Minimum Revenue Guarantee, a common incentive used nationwide to help new airline routes become financially sustainable during their early stages.
The Moore County Tourism Development Authority also recently approved the use of occupancy tax funds to support the effort.
Commercial Flights Could Impact Travel and Business Growth
Supporters say adding Moore County Airport commercial air service would improve travel options for residents, tourists, and local businesses throughout Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, and the surrounding Sandhills region.
Airport Authority Chairman Adam Kiker described the process as a long and difficult effort but said the project is finally nearing the finish line.
Officials also reported growing public interest in the Fly Local campaign. According to airport representatives, hundreds of people have already signed up online in support of bringing commercial flights to Moore County.
Additional Airport Expansion Projects Continue
Alongside the push for commercial air service, the Moore County Airport continues investing in infrastructure improvements.
The Airport Authority recently approved a contract to build two new corporate hangars and continues preparing for apron repaving work scheduled later this summer.
Airport leaders say the upgrades are designed to support future growth and improve services for local businesses and travelers across the Sandhills.
