Aberdeen Downtown Revitalization Efforts Continue Through Main Street Program

Town leaders in Aberdeen say progress continues in revitalizing the downtown district as officials prepare for upcoming leadership changes within the Main Street Program. The Aberdeen downtown revitalization Main Street initiative has become a major part of the town’s economic development strategy in recent years.

Aberdeen joined the national Main Street Program more than four years ago, gaining access to resources, training, and development support through the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

Downtown Aberdeen Continues to Grow

Town officials say recent infrastructure improvements and private investment have helped increase foot traffic throughout downtown Aberdeen over the past two years.

Downtown Planner Lindy Lamielle described the Main Street model as “downtown revitalization in a box,” explaining that consistent planning and maintenance have helped drive momentum.

The Downtown Aberdeen Advisory Board recently participated in a training session led by Main Street education coordinator Naomi Riley as the town prepares for Lamielle’s future departure from the department.

Riley emphasized that successful downtown revitalization requires cooperation between local government, businesses, volunteers, and property owners.

Community Participation Remains Important

One challenge officials continue to face is collecting growth and employment data from private businesses. Leaders say stronger participation could improve Aberdeen’s ability to secure grants and strengthen its annual Main Street evaluation.

The Aberdeen downtown revitalization Main Street effort is evaluated using several standards including communication, economic development, preservation, organizational leadership, and sustainability.

Town leaders say Aberdeen has made strong progress but still has room to improve when it comes to sharing success stories and promoting downtown initiatives.

More information about the state’s downtown development programs can be found through the North Carolina Department of Commerce.

The Aberdeen downtown revitalization Main Street program continues shaping growth across one of Moore County’s fastest-growing downtown districts.
