Highway 211 Widening: Montrose Road Closes for 2 Months in Hoke County

If you drive NC 211 between Aberdeen and Raeford, there’s a road closure you need to know about right now. The ongoing Highway 211 widening project in Hoke County has reached a new phase — and it’s shutting down a key cross street for the next two months.

NCDOT contractors have closed Montrose Road at its intersection with NC 211 (Aberdeen Road) in Hoke County while construction crews work on the major four-lane expansion project. The closure is already in effect and is expected to last approximately two months.

What the Highway 211 Widening Means for Local Drivers

The NC 211 widening project is one of the most significant road improvement efforts underway in the Sandhills region. The project spans roughly 15 miles between Aberdeen in Moore County and Raeford in Hoke County, expanding the route from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway.

For years, the stretch of NC 211 between Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Raeford has been one of the more congested and accident-prone corridors in the region. The widening is designed to reduce traffic delays, improve safety, and handle the area’s growing population — particularly as Moore County continues to see significant residential and commercial development.

Drivers who rely on Montrose Road as a connector to NC 211 will need to identify an alternate route for the duration of the closure. NCDOT has not announced a specific detour, but residents are encouraged to use nearby cross streets and allow extra travel time during the closure period.

When Will the Highway 211 Project Be Finished?

The widening project has been divided into two construction phases. The first phase, focused on the Hoke County portion of the corridor, is expected to be completed by late 2028. The second phase — covering the Moore County side toward Aberdeen — is planned around the 2029 U.S. Open golf tournament at Pinehurst and is not expected to be fully finished until 2034.

While the timeline is long, crews have been making steady progress. This latest closure of Montrose Road is a sign that work is actively moving through the Hoke County section of the project.
