As a second round of winter weather approaches the Sandhills, North Carolina transportation officials are urging residents to prepare now and stay off the roads once snow and ice arrive.
NCDOT Crews Preparing for Dangerous Conditions
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, crews have already applied nearly 970,000 gallons of brine across the state. Brine helps prevent ice from bonding to pavement and lowers the freezing point of water.
More than 1,100 NCDOT employees and contractors are working to treat interstates, highways, and major secondary roads across Moore County and surrounding Sandhills communities.
Cold Temperatures Increase Risk
Transportation officials warn that bitter cold temperatures expected through the weekend could cause roads to refreeze overnight, creating hazardous driving conditions even after daytime melting.
Drivers in Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and across Moore County are encouraged to stay home if possible and allow crews to work safely.
