A developing winter storm is bringing increasing confidence for significant snowfall across the Sandhills this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of central North Carolina, including Moore, Richmond, Scotland, and Hoke counties, beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Sunday afternoon.
Forecast models now indicate that 3 to 8 inches of snow is possible across the region, with locally higher amounts not out of the question depending on the exact track of the storm.
Sandhills Communities Impacted
Communities expected to see impacts include Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, Carthage, Vass, Whispering Pines, Seven Lakes, Raeford, Rockingham, and Laurinburg along with surrounding rural areas.
Timing and What to Expect
Snow could begin as early as late Friday night, with the heaviest snowfall expected on Saturday. Very cold air will already be in place, with daytime highs on Saturday likely remaining in the mid-20s and overnight lows falling into the teens.
Unlike recent systems, forecasters expect this to be mostly snow rather than a wintry mix. However, strong winds with gusts between 25 and 35 miles per hour could lead to reduced visibility and drifting snow.
Travel Concerns Across the Sandhills
Travel may become difficult or impossible at times, especially during the height of the storm. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution on major Sandhills roadways including:
- US-1 through Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Sanford
- US-15/501 connecting Pinehurst, Aberdeen, and Carthage
- NC-22 near Carthage and surrounding communities
- NC-211 and NC-690, especially on bridges and shaded areas
Overnight refreezing will remain a concern even after snowfall ends, creating slick conditions each morning.
Potential Impacts
The weight of snow combined with gusty winds could lead to sporadic power outages across the Sandhills. Residents are encouraged to prepare now by charging devices, checking emergency supplies, and limiting travel plans this weekend.
Emergency officials advise monitoring forecasts closely as details continue to become clearer in the next 24 to 36 hours.
