Thousands of residents in Lee and Moore counties were left without electricity Tuesday night after a transmission line failure caused widespread outages across the Sandhills.
According to Central Electric Membership Corporation, outages impacted areas including West Sanford, Carthage, and Cameron, leaving more than 4,000 of its customers without power. Duke Energy also reported more than 5,000 customers lost electricity at the peak of the outage.
Duke Energy confirmed that one of its transmission lines was responsible for the disruption. Power has since been restored to Duke Energy customers, while Central Electric crews continue working with Duke Energy to bring service back to remaining areas as safely and quickly as possible.
The outage highlights how interconnected utility systems are across the Sandhills and how a single transmission issue can impact thousands of homes and businesses.
