Moore County leaders are taking a major step toward restoring commercial airline service at the Moore County Airport. Officials are working to create a special account that would allow up to $3 million in private donations to be used as a financial guarantee for an airline willing to serve the region.
The fund, known as a Minimum Revenue Guarantee, would ensure an airline meets its operating and profit goals even if early passenger numbers are lower than expected. If the airline falls short, the fund makes up the difference. If the airline exceeds its goal, the county receives credit.
Consultants say interest already exists from a large regional carrier, with discussions centered on one daily flight using a 50-seat regional jet connecting Moore County to Washington Dulles International Airport. Studies show even a small percentage of travelers switching from Raleigh-Durham International Airport could support multiple daily flights.
County commissioners are expected to consider creating the account at their January 6 meeting. Local business leaders say commercial air service would help attract employees, reduce travel time, and strengthen the regional economy.
