North Carolina is officially under a State of Emergency as a major winter storm is expected to impact much of the state this weekend, including central North Carolina and the Sandhills.

Governor Josh Stein announced the declaration Tuesday, activating the State Emergency Response Team and urging residents to complete storm preparations by Friday evening.

Officials Urge Residents to Stay Off the Roads

According to the Governor’s Office, NCDOT crews are pre-treating roads and bridges statewide, while emergency crews prepare to work around the clock.

“Now is the time to prepare,” Stein said, encouraging residents to avoid travel so first responders can work safely.

What to Expect This Weekend

Hazardous road conditions are expected to begin early Saturday and could last for several days due to freezing temperatures and lingering snow and ice.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and review winter safety tips at ReadyNC.gov. Real-time road conditions are available at DriveNC.gov.
