SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Three individuals, including two adults and one juvenile, have been arrested in connection with a shooting at Brookside Park Apartments that left one person injured earlier this month.
According to the Southern Pines Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 5 p.m. on December 10 at the apartment complex on Shaw Avenue. Investigators say shots were fired into a residential unit during an altercation, and one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Police announced the arrests on December 19. Devonta Clark, 29, of Greenville, faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, felony conspiracy, and discharging a firearm within town limits. Clark was taken into custody in Pitt County. Chadrick Cooper of Jackson Springs was also arrested on similar charges. A juvenile, whose identity has not been released, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
Southern Pines Deputy Police Chief Robert Heaton confirmed that investigators determined one or more suspects fled the scene in a white SUV following the shooting. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing children nearby when shots were fired, raising concerns about public safety in the residential area.
Residents told Sandhills Sentinel that an argument occurred before gunfire erupted. Hollow-point bullet casings were reportedly found nearby, and a stray bullet struck a parked vehicle’s tire. No additional injuries were reported.
The Southern Pines Police Department credited assistance from the Moore County District Attorney’s Office, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service in the investigation.
Police say the case remains active and additional arrests are possible. Anyone with information is asked to contact SPPD Investigations Sergeant Michael Griffin at (910) 692-7031 or call the anonymous tip line at (910) 693-4110.
