Southern Pines Reservoir Park Dam repairs are officially moving into the construction phase after the Town Council approved $800,000 in funding during its February meeting. Town leaders say the project is critical to improving stormwater control and protecting neighborhoods ahead of future heavy rain events.

The Reservoir Park Dam has long been identified as an infrastructure concern in Southern Pines. Although town officials previously sought grant funding to offset costs, state agencies classified the project as maintenance rather than a competitive grant opportunity, forcing the town to fund the work locally.

Why Southern Pines Reservoir Park Dam Repairs Are Urgent

Town Manager Reagan Parsons told council members that delaying the Southern Pines Reservoir Park Dam repairs would likely result in higher long-term costs. The dam plays a key role in regulating water levels at Reservoir Park, and better control during major storms could reduce downstream flooding risks.

Officials have secured state permits and prepared bid documents, meaning construction can begin once contracts are finalized. Rather than postponing the project further, council members agreed the repairs should move forward now.

How Southern Pines Is Paying for the Dam Project

The Southern Pines Reservoir Park Dam repairs will be funded through multiple revenue sources. The town will recognize more than $280,000 in first-quarter sales tax revenue, $250,000 in higher-than-expected investment earnings, transfer $376,000 from available fund balance, and redirect $300,000 previously allocated for fleet maintenance facility design.

The fleet design project will shift to a future budget cycle, allowing dam construction to take priority.

What Residents Should Expect

Once construction begins, residents may notice increased activity near Reservoir Park. The long-term goal of the Southern Pines Reservoir Park Dam repairs is to strengthen storm resilience and protect property across Southern Pines and parts of Moore County.

Residents can follow official updates through the Town of Southern Pines website.
