In college basketball, Duke earned a 67-54 win against Clemson. No. UNC topped Pittsburgh, 70-65. The Tar Heels will have to find a way to win with Caleb Wilson ruled out indefinitely this season. Miami survived NC state, 77-76.
And in women’s college hoops, a rivalry renewed, Duke bested UNC 72-68.
Hornets rookie on track to break league record
Hornets rookie Ron Knueppel has 183 three-pointers on the season, which is on track to beat the rookie record for a single seasons which is 206. The Hornets have 27 games still to play and sit 9th in the Eastern Conference.
The Hornets play the Rockets Thursday at 7 p.m.
Area teams split contests over weekend
In local hoops, Pinecrest and Richmond Senior split contests Friday. The girls defeated Richmond Senior 60-34 before boys fell 78-66. Union Pines also came away 1-1 this weekend against Western Harnett. Union Pines girls fell to Western Harnett, 43-36 before the boys earned a 75-51 win during the night cap.
Pinecrest, Union Pines send wrestlers to state individual tourney
Postseason wrestling heating up for area grapplers as Pinecrest ties its programs best sending 8 to the state stage while Union Pines, 6A regional champs, sends 5 to the individual title stage.
Pinecrest individuals vying for a title include, by name and weight class:
Jakob Trujillo, 108; Matthew Akins, 113; Jimmy Araujo, 120; Ethan Finn, 126; Mitchell Rowland, 138; Evan Williams, 150; Cole Harrison, 215; and Finn Morgan, 285.
Union Pines individuals vying for a title include, by name and weight class: Liam Myles, 106; Daniel McDermott, 113; Tripp Sullivan, 165; Dominic Blue, 175; and Wesley Sykes, 190.
Scotland County’s Jeremiah Reynolds will be vying for the 215-pound individual title.
