Rockingham Speedway Sold to IHRA, Plans Announced to Revitalize “The Rock” in 2026

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Rockingham Speedway, the historic track known worldwide as “The Rock,” has a new owner — and new plans aimed at bringing more racing and entertainment back to Richmond County.

The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has purchased Rockingham Speedway after the property had been on the market since last summer. IHRA owner Darryl Cuttell said the organization intends to be “good stewards” of the facility while respecting its history and working with partners to create fan-focused experiences.

The track was previously owned by Rockingham Properties LLC, which acquired the speedway in 2018 for $2.8 million. The venue drew renewed attention in 2025 with the return of NASCAR racing, and IHRA says it plans to build on that momentum going forward.

Planned improvements include facility upgrades, expanded fan amenities, and added entertainment elements such as concerts and festival-style experiences alongside marquee racing events. Organizers also say the Easter weekend NASCAR event this spring is expected to feature a full slate of on-track activity, including the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and ARCA Menards Series West, plus fan-focused programming throughout the holiday weekend.

Local tourism leaders say Rockingham Speedway remains one of the region’s most recognizable icons, drawing visitors and boosting the area’s economy. IHRA leadership noted discussions are underway with experienced event partners as the organization plans for future events beginning in 2026.
