Upcoming changes to North Carolina’s Medicaid program were the focus of a Tuesday roundtable in Fayetteville involving Gov. Josh Stein, health care providers, local officials and Medicaid recipients.
ABC11 reports that more than 130,000 Cumberland County residents receive Medicaid. Cumberland County Chairman Kirk deViere said approximately 40 percent of the county’s population depends on the program for health coverage.
New Requirements Coming in 2027
Federal and state changes will affect eligibility, renewals and reporting requirements. According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, additional requirements for certain adults ages 19 through 64 without disabilities will begin January 1, 2027.
Those changes include a work and community-engagement requirement for some recipients. State officials are encouraging beneficiaries to learn whether the rules apply to them and make sure their contact information remains current.
Public Town Hall Scheduled Tonight
NCDHHS will hold a public fireside chat and telephone town hall from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 14. Officials will explain the new requirements, answer questions and direct residents to available assistance.
The program will stream through the department’s Facebook, YouTube and X accounts. Residents can also listen and submit questions by calling 855-756-7520 and entering extension 137698 followed by the pound sign.
Additional information and bilingual materials are available through the state’s Know What’s Next resource page.
