Moore County Schools is taking steps toward a short-term solution to address staffing gaps in school security, particularly at elementary schools.
The district’s Board of Education Temporary Safety Committee recently met with leaders from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office to discuss using off-duty deputies to help fill coverage gaps.
How the Plan Would Work
The proposed agreement would prioritize elementary schools located farthest from municipal police departments. While the deputies would not officially serve as School Resource Officers, they would retain full law enforcement authority on campus.
School officials stressed the plan is a temporary measure while the district continues efforts to hire additional full-time officers.
The cost would be $55 per officer per hour, funded by unfilled SRO positions already included in the school system’s budget.
The agreement is undergoing legal review and could be presented to the full school board for a vote as early as February.
