Moore County Growth Rate Drives Future Transportation Planning Decisions

Moore County growth rate transportation planning is taking center stage as local leaders prepare for decades of expansion across Southern Pines, Pinehurst, and Aberdeen. Officials are working to ensure roads and infrastructure keep pace with expected population increases.

The Sandhills Metropolitan Planning Organization (SMPO) recently confirmed a 1.75% annual growth rate, which will guide transportation planning through 2055.

Moore County Growth Rate, Transportation Planning, and Population Projections

At that rate, the county’s population could reach approximately 173,000 people by 2055. That includes strong growth in communities like Southern Pines, Pinehurst, and Aberdeen.

Some local data suggested even higher growth rates, but officials chose a balanced approach to avoid underestimating road demand while staying realistic.

The transportation model being developed will help determine future road projects, traffic flow improvements, and development approvals.

Why This Matters for Sandhills Drivers

Moore County growth rate and transportation planning decisions directly impact daily commutes and long-term development. If growth is underestimated, roads could become congested, and infrastructure could fall behind.

Leaders emphasized that planning must account not just for residents, but also visitors and commuters who travel through the area each day.

Officials will submit the finalized growth rate to the North Carolina Department of Transportation to guide future planning efforts.
