The Moore County Board of Commissioners is exploring a potential new water source while also approving funding for major public safety and transportation projects.

During a March 3 meeting, commissioners approved moving forward with a preliminary engineering evaluation of the Crystal Lake–Little River area as a possible long-term water supply for Moore County.

Crystal Lake Water Supply Study Begins

County leaders awarded a contract to LKC Engineering to begin a detailed evaluation of the Crystal Lake option.

The firm will conduct surveying, topographic analysis, reservoir yield studies, and preliminary planning for a potential water treatment facility.

According to county officials, the Crystal Lake water supply study will help determine whether the location could support Moore County’s future water needs as the Sandhills region continues to grow.

The preliminary report is expected to be completed before June.

New Sheriff’s Forensic Facility Approved

Commissioners also approved a budget amendment transferring $4 million toward construction of a new forensic facility for the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

The facility will expand the county’s ability to process DNA evidence, conduct toxicology testing related to DWI cases, and analyze digital and vehicle evidence.

Officials say the lab could benefit not only Moore County but also neighboring counties and regional investigators.

Transit Vehicles Approved

The board also approved contracts to purchase new vans for Moore County Transportation Services.

The vehicles will replace aging transit vans used to provide transportation for residents across the county.

The purchases are largely funded through a federal and state grant program that covers 90 percent of the total project cost.

County officials say the upgrades will help ensure transportation services remain reliable for residents throughout Moore County, including communities such as Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Pinehurst.
