Moore County officials have announced that all Moore County governmental offices will be closed on Monday, February 2, 2026, as dangerously cold conditions continue across the Sandhills. The Moore County Department of Public Safety issued the announcement Sunday afternoon.
Moore County Closures for Monday, February 2
According to the county, the following facilities and services will be closed on Monday:
- All Moore County Governmental Offices
- Park and Recreation activities
- Collections Site and Landfill
- Moore County Library branches
- Moore County Transportation
- Senior Enrichment Center activities
Officials Warn: Ice on Ponds and Lakes Is Not Safe
With an extended period of below-freezing temperatures, county officials say some bodies of water across the Sandhills may appear frozen—but the ice is thin and extremely dangerous.
Parents are urged to talk with children about staying off frozen ponds, lakes, and reservoirs. While the ice may look solid, officials warn it cannot support the weight of people or pets.
Moore County Public Safety also cautions that ice is especially unsafe near moving water. Rivers, streams, and springs weaken ice from underneath, even when the surface appears frozen.
Cold Weather Safety: Protect Against Hypothermia and Frostbite
Officials remind residents that prolonged exposure to extreme cold can lead to frostbite and hypothermia. When outdoors, residents are encouraged to take the following precautions:
- Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing
- Wear a hat and cover exposed skin
- Stay dry and avoid windy conditions when possible
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold
- Wear mittens rather than gloves when possible for better warmth
