Residents gathered in West Southern Pines over the weekend to celebrate the official dedication of J. Pleasant Hines Park Southern Pines and Joe R. Wynn Pool.
The emotional ceremony recognized two men whose leadership and service helped shape generations within the historic West Southern Pines community.
Community leaders, family members, former students, and residents attended the event despite rainy weather conditions.
Honoring the Legacy of J. Pleasant Hines Park Southern Pines
J. Pleasant Hines served as mayor of West Southern Pines from 1923 to 1927 before the historically Black municipality was annexed into Southern Pines in 1931.
Speakers during the ceremony praised Hines for fighting to improve opportunities and progress for the community during a critical time in local history.
Officials also highlighted the impact of Joe R. Wynn, who served as an educator, coach, lifeguard, and mentor after arriving in Southern Pines in 1962.
Community members described Wynn as someone deeply committed to helping local children succeed both in and outside the classroom.
Celebrating West Southern Pines History
The newly renamed pool also carries important historical significance. Community leaders noted the pool was originally built decades ago because Black residents were excluded from other swimming facilities during segregation and early integration.
Former students and community members shared stories about Wynn teaching children how to swim and creating a safe gathering place for local families.
Town officials said the dedication serves as both a celebration of the past and a reminder of the importance of preserving local history throughout Southern Pines and Moore County.
The ceremony closed with prayers and remarks encouraging future generations to continue building on the leadership legacy left behind by Hines and Wynn.
