A talented young artist from Southern Pines is gaining national attention.
Layla Hoogland, a nine-year-old third grader at Episcopal Day School, has advanced to the final round of the “America’s Most Artistic Kid” contest, sponsored by Bob Ross Inc.
The winner will receive $20,000, have their artwork displayed at the Minnetrista Museum in Indiana, and be featured in a special project connected to The Joy of Painting.
Her journey is especially meaningful. Her father says art has helped her heal through difficult experiences and continues to bring joy to both her and others.
Voting is open through Thursday at 7 p.m., with optional donations supporting Blood Cancer United.
Hero Utility Worker Saves Toddler Just in Time

Utility worker Robert Butler spotted a toddler running toward a busy intersection and didn’t hesitate. He pulled over, sprinted toward the child, and reached him just seconds before he could run into traffic.

Seven Kittens Rescued from Lowe’s Shelf
An unexpected discovery at a Lowe’s store in Pennsylvania turned into a heartwarming rescue.
Employees heard kittens meowing from high above in the Garden Center and discovered seven kittens living on a shelf across two separate litters.
With the help of Lucky Dawg Rescue, the kittens were safely brought down using a forklift.
The kittens—now named Forklift, Herb, Pallet, Planter, Grass, Lowe, and Rose—are healthy and will soon be available for adoption.
Rescuers are also working to safely capture the mother cats for care and spaying.
