Thousands of military personnel, civilian employees, and commuters will soon face a major traffic change as the Fort Bragg All-American Freeway Closure moves forward.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation and Fort Bragg officials announced that a section of the freeway and the All American Access Control Point will close sometime after Independence Day.
Fort Bragg All-American Freeway Closure Could Last Two Years
The closure will affect the freeway between Gruber Road and Zabitosky Road, along with the Gruber Road interchange and the All-American Gate.
The project is expected to last up to 24 months and includes replacing the aging Gruber Road bridge and repairing sections of highway damaged by long-term settling beneath the roadway.
Officials say the bridge is approaching the end of its useful life and currently limits the movement of heavy military equipment.
Project Aims to Improve Safety
NCDOT recently awarded a $15.5 million contract to Highland Paving of Fayetteville to complete the work.
Officials say completing the bridge replacement and roadway repairs during one closure will improve safety, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and speed up construction.
The Fort Bragg Visitors Center will remain open during construction.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor future traffic updates as the closure date approaches.
