Five Tractor-Trailers Burn in Early Morning Fire Near Vass

VASS, NC — Five unoccupied tractor-trailers were destroyed in an early morning fire Sunday in a remote area off Highway 690, according to Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue.

Fire crews were dispatched just after 1:00 a.m. to reports of an outside fire. When the first engine arrived, firefighters found a grass fire that had already spread to several trailers. A secondary assessment confirmed that five tractor-trailers—without tractors attached—were fully involved.

Due to the isolated location and limited access to water, firefighters relied on three tanker trucks to supply water to the attack engine. Crews worked to prevent the fire from spreading further, as several nearby trailers were also threatened.

Fire officials said suppression efforts were complicated by one trailer carrying more than 1,800 bales of pine straw, which intensified the flames and prolonged the response.

Firefighters remained on scene for more than five hours and continued to monitor the area throughout the day as materials continued to smolder.

Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Southern Pines Fire Department, Crains Creek Fire Department, North Carolina Forest Service, Moore County EMS, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Department.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been released.
