Carthage Woman Charged with Felony Meth Possession After Aberdeen Walmart Theft Investigation, Police Say

ABERDEEN, N.C. — A reported larceny at the Aberdeen Walmart led to a felony drug charge after investigators say suspected stolen items and methamphetamine were found during a traffic stop.

According to the Aberdeen Police Department, officers responded to a call about a larceny in progress on Aug. 24. Police said they located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop near the store. Authorities identified Amber Smith, 31, of Carthage as the driver.

Officers reported seeing alleged stolen merchandise in plain view inside the vehicle. During a search to recover the property, police say they found a bag containing a crystal-like substance in the glove box that they determined belonged to Smith. The substance was submitted to the North Carolina State Crime Laboratory for testing.

Authorities said lab results returned on Oct. 9 confirmed the substance was methamphetamine. Warrants were obtained on Nov. 19, and Smith was located and arrested on Dec. 24. She was given a $10,000 secured bond.

All charges are allegations. Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
