A Cameron NC officer-involved shooting is under investigation after a deadly encounter between a suspect and a Moore County deputy late Saturday night. The incident has raised concerns across the Sandhills as authorities work to determine exactly what happened.

According to initial reports, the situation began along Carthage Street near U.S. Highway 1 in Cameron. A driver traveling through the area called 911 after their vehicle was struck by gunfire. Officials say a man armed with a rifle was allegedly firing at passing cars.

Suspect Reportedly Fired at Deputy

When deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene, the suspect reportedly fired at a responding deputy. The deputy returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. No deputies were injured during the Cameron NC officer-involved shooting.
