ABERDEEN, N.C. — Some Aberdeen residents and businesses should prepare for a planned interruption in water service Wednesday as construction continues along the Highway 5 corridor.
The Town of Aberdeen says water service will be shut off from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19. The five-hour outage is needed so the contractor working on the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Highway 5 widening project can complete a new water-main connection.
Which areas will be affected?
The scheduled outage includes portions of Highway 5 and U.S. 1, along with Colonial Heights, Pinehurst Street, Roseland Road and Keith Street. The town’s official notice includes a map outlining the affected service area, and customers near the listed roads should check that map if they are uncertain whether their property is included.
Because the interruption is scheduled during the middle of the day, residents may want to complete laundry, dishwashing and other water-dependent activities before 9 a.m. Businesses within the affected area may also need to adjust their operations during the outage window.
Water-main work connected to Highway 5 project
The outage is part of utility work associated with the ongoing Highway 5 widening project. Crews must temporarily stop water service to safely connect the new section of water main to the existing system.
The town announced the outage in advance so customers could make plans before work begins. The notice lists 2 p.m. as the scheduled completion time for the water-main tie-in.
Aberdeen moves to voluntary water conservation
The planned outage comes as Aberdeen transitions from mandatory Stage 1 water restrictions to Stage 1 voluntary reduction. Under the updated conservation level, residents and businesses are being asked to reduce their normal water use by five percent.
Recommended conservation measures include repairing leaking faucets and toilets, running washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, and watering lawns only when grass shows signs of stress. The town also asks customers to limit landscape irrigation to no more than one inch per week and to water between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Using drinking water to wash driveways, sidewalks and other paved surfaces should also be avoided unless it is necessary for health or safety. Town officials say water-supply conditions will continue to be monitored, with additional updates provided when needed.
Residents can follow the Town of Aberdeen’s website and emergency-notification channels for any changes or additional service information.
