An SUV left N.C. 24/27 and crashed into a house outside Carthage Monday morning after the driver reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel.
The crash happened shortly before 10:15 a.m. near Promise Lane. A Honda CR-V carrying three people was traveling from Charlotte toward Fayetteville when the vehicle failed to follow a curve, left the right side of the highway and continued for more than 300 feet before striking the home, according to a report from Moore County News.
One occupant taken to hospital
One of the three people in the SUV was transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The other two occupants were not taken to a hospital.
No one was inside the house when the crash occurred. A dog at the residence was not injured.
The impact caused visible damage to the home and brought emergency crews to the scene. The report did not identify the occupants of the SUV or provide an estimate of the damage to the residence.
Drowsy driving can be dangerous
The circumstances serve as a reminder of the risks associated with drowsy driving. Fatigue can slow reaction time, reduce awareness and make it difficult for a driver to maintain control, particularly on curves or during longer trips.
Drivers who begin to feel sleepy should move to a safe location and stop driving. Opening a window, turning up the radio or relying on caffeine may provide only a brief sense of alertness and should not be treated as a substitute for rest.
Motorists approaching an active crash scene should slow down, remain alert and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
No additional injuries were reported in connection with Monday’s crash.
