CARTHAGE, N.C. — The Moore County Board of Adjustment will hold a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to consider two variance requests connected to a proposed Sheetz convenience store and gas station in West End.
The meeting begins at 4 p.m. in the Board of Commissioners Meeting Room on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse in Carthage.
What Sheetz Is Requesting
The proposed store would be located at 5364 N.C. Highway 211 in West End. Sheetz is requesting a variance that would allow a fuel canopy to be placed in the front yard of the property.
The company is also seeking permission to deviate from Section 7.8.L of Moore County’s Unified Development Ordinance. That section of the Highway Corridor Overlay District requires adjoining parcels serving, or potentially serving, commercial or multifamily uses to be interconnected.
The two requests will be considered during separate quasi-judicial hearings.
Plans for the West End Location
Plans previously presented to county officials called for a 6,139-square-foot Sheetz building on approximately 4.82 acres of industrial property. The proposal included eight fuel pumps offering 16 fueling positions.
The preliminary site plan also featured mobile-order pickup lanes instead of a traditional drive-through, with access proposed from N.C. 211 and Mode Road.
The site is located along a section of N.C. 211 where a major highway-widening project is planned. The proposed store would still need to satisfy applicable stormwater, watershed, landscaping, highway-access, fire-safety and utility requirements.
Hearing Is Not Final Project Approval
Wednesday’s hearing is limited to the two requested variances and does not represent final approval of the entire Sheetz development.
