Richmond Community College will host Amazon Web Services’ Information Infrastructure Workshop (I2W) for Educators on Monday, Feb. 9, bringing together educators, workforce leaders, and industry experts to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in cloud computing and information infrastructure careers.

The one-day workshop runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cole Auditorium in Hamlet and is designed to help education and workforce professionals better understand the physical infrastructure that supports cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and the modern digital economy.

Understanding the Infrastructure Behind the Cloud

Led by Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Information Infrastructure Workshop focuses on the real-world systems that power today’s technology—from data centers and fiber networks to electrical and mechanical operations. As cloud and AI technologies continue to reshape industries, employers are facing an increasing need for trained workers to support these critical systems.

Participants will gain insight into career pathways within information infrastructure through hands-on activities, real-world demonstrations, and direct engagement with industry leaders.

AWS will also have two mobile data centers on-site in the Cole Auditorium parking lot, giving attendees a rare opportunity to see firsthand how data centers operate and how their mechanical and electrical systems function.

Workforce Development and Career Pathways

“Workforce training programs open doors for people at every stage of their career,” said Roger Wehner, vice president of Economic Development for Amazon Web Services. “Whether you’re a student just beginning to learn about these fields, a community college student building expertise, or someone transitioning into a new career, these opportunities create clear pathways from education to employment.”

Wehner noted that Amazon is investing in hands-on training in Richmond County for high-demand skills such as fiber optics and data center operations, partnering with K-12 schools and community colleges to build awareness and workforce readiness. These efforts aim to create well-paying jobs while strengthening the infrastructure communities depend on.

Hands-On Learning and Industry Engagement

The workshop begins with presentations and interactive learning experiences centered on infrastructure-related careers and the skills required to succeed in the field. Participants will take part in hands-on activities that reflect the day-to-day responsibilities of information infrastructure professionals, offering a practical look at careers supporting digital systems.

In the afternoon, educators and workforce leaders will engage directly with AWS managers, talent acquisition professionals, and specialized vendors involved in data center construction and operations. These discussions will focus on aligning education and training programs with employer needs and expanding access to career pathways for diverse populations, including veterans, high school graduates, college students, and individuals changing careers.

Throughout the day, participants will have opportunities to build connections with industry experts and workforce partners, laying the groundwork for future collaboration and program development.
