Chatham County Prepares for Walk for Peace Along U.S. 64 in Siler City

Law enforcement agencies across Chatham County are coordinating plans ahead of the upcoming Walk for Peace, a long-distance journey expected to pass through Siler City later this month.

According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, the walk is expected to enter the county and travel through Siler City along U.S. 64 around January 21, though exact timing may change due to weather and travel conditions.

What Is the Walk for Peace?

The Walk for Peace is a pilgrimage led by Buddhist monks traveling on foot from Texas to Washington, D.C., sharing messages of peace, compassion, and nonviolence. The group moves quietly through communities, often drawing attention for its peaceful presence rather than organized demonstrations.

The monks have also been accompanied for much of their journey by a rescue dog named Aloka, who has become a symbol of the walk’s message.

Traffic and Safety Planning Underway

The Sheriff’s Office is working alongside the Siler City Police Department, Pittsboro Police Department, and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to manage traffic and ensure pedestrian safety.

Because the walk is expected to travel along a busy stretch of U.S. 64, officers will be positioned to direct traffic as needed and reduce risks for both drivers and pedestrians.

Designated Viewing Area for Supporters

Officials say a designated gathering area is being identified for community members who wish to observe or show support. If the group follows the expected route, supporters will be asked to gather along the southbound side of U.S. 64 near Wendy’s and Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q in Siler City.

Those attending will be asked to park in the nearby Walmart parking lot and avoid stopping on road shoulders or attempting to walk alongside the group.

What Drivers Should Expect

Motorists traveling through Siler City and surrounding areas should expect increased pedestrian activity and possible brief traffic delays. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, remain alert, and follow all instructions provided by law enforcement officers on scene.

Additional updates and safety information will be shared as the walk’s route and schedule become more certain.
